Education
UETC, Inc. offers courses to promote an ocean literate society. Centers For Ocean Sciences Educational Excellece (COSEE) defines ‘Ocean Literacy’ as (having) an understanding of the ocean’s influence on you and your influence on the ocean. An ocean-literate person understands:
- the essential principles and fundamental concepts about the functioning of the ocean;
- can communicate about the ocean in a meaningful way; and
- is able to make informed and responsible decisions regarding the ocean and its resources
Every ocean literate person should understand the following essential principles:
- The Earth has one big ocean with many features.
- The ocean and life in the ocean shape the features of Earth.
- The ocean is a major influence on weather and climate.
- The ocean makes the Earth habitable.
- The ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems.
- The ocean and humans are inextricably interconnected.
- The ocean is largely unexplored.
Curriculum

The course is designed and set up to give students a broad overview of all aspects of animals and some plants found in the Gulf of Maine. It is also designed for high school students who might be thinking of entering the field of marine science or wildlife conservation and/or preservation.

Presentations
- Sea Turtles: An Endangered Species
Attendees will learn about five species of sea turtles, their endangered status, world distribution, threats to species future and more.
Time: Approximately 30-45 minutes - Invertebrates in the Gulf of Maine
Viewers will watch a slide presentation of native as well as invasive species in the Gulf of Maine.
Time: Approximately 45 minutes - To Die For: 100 Million Sharks Per Year
