Marine Educational Scholarship

Guidelines


Overview:

The Jim Sands Memorial Marine Educational Scholarships are awarded annually to one high school senior and to one college undergraduate (Sophomores, Juniors or Seniors only), studying marine sciences. The high school scholarship is up to a maximum amount of $500.00. The college scholarship is up to a maximum of $2,500.00. Either scholarship may be used for any expense directly related to the study of marine or freshwater preservation, marine or fresh water conservation, marine or freshwater ecosystems or marine animal husbandry (freshwater animal husbandry excluded), except as stated below. Funds may not be used for food, lodging/room & board or travel expenses.

High School Senior Scholarship:

May only be used for SCUBA certification, higher-level SCUBA certification beyond Basic Certification; If already SCUBA certified, may be used to purchase required equipment directly related to SCUBA (specifically excluding any fishing/spear fishing, lobstering or any other fish/game taking equipment including catch bags, nets, hooks, tickler sticks, etc.).

To qualify for the High School Senior Scholarship (up to $500.00), the applicant must:

A. Be in their senior year of high school.

B. Fill out an application and return the original and three (3) copies early enough to be received no later than the deadline date on the application.

C. Provide evidence that he/she has worked or volunteered over the previous summer in one or more of the following areas:

a. Marine or Freshwater Preservation

b. Conservation efforts of marine or freshwater ecosystems

c. Marine Animal Husbandry

D. Provide a short essay to the organization (UETC) describing why they are interested in the preservation of marine/freshwater life, marine or freshwater ecosystems, or the world’s oceans and why they have chosen to pursue stu dies in the marine sciences area(s).

Undergraduate College/University Student:

To qualify for the undergraduate college/university student grant, the applicant must:

A. Be enrolled in an accredited college or university with a declared major in the marine sciences or marine/freshwater conservation.

B. Fill out an application and return the original and three (3) copies early enough to be received no later than the deadline date on the application.

C. Must be in their second, third or fourth year of studies with a declared major in one of the following areas:

a. Marine Sciences

b. Marine Management

c. Marine or Freshwater Conservation

d. Marine or Freshwater Ecosystem Conservation

e. Marine Animal Husbandry

D. Provide a short essay to the organization (UETC) describing why they are interested in the preservation of marine life, marine and/or freshwater ecosystems or the world’s oceans, and why they have chosen to pursue studies in the marine sciences. Winners, by applying for the scholarship, give their consent/permission and release for their essay to be published, without compensation and without limit, in only the UETC newsletter “Cross-Currents” and/or on the UETC web site. No other publication will be permitted unless written authorization is obtained by the writer/scholarship winner either with or without compensation.

Scholarship winners and award amounts will be selected by the UETC Board of Directors from the qualifying applicants during the month of May and winners will be announced at the organization’s Annual Meeting.

Winners will be notified by certified mail and will be posted on the UETC Scholarship page of the web site.

UETC will require each grantee to provide proper evidence that grant monies were expensed in accordance with the above guidelines. Receipts, copies of cancelled checks and / or documentation from the school or attending college or university may be presented for this purpose upon request of the UETC Board of Directors.

UETC reserves the right to revoke any and all grant funds awarded if the grantee cannot or does not comply with the terms of the grant as stated above.

For the 2006/2007 academic year, we have added a FAQ form which we highly encourage all applicants to review prior to filling out an application or writing their essay.
